Cadets

Becoming an Air Cadet opens up a world of adventure, new experiences and challenges, making friends for life and having fun.

You will get the opportunity to try flying from RAF Cranwell and Gliding from RAF Syerston as well as take part in adventure training weekends, go with other Air Cadets to RAF bases in Gibralter and Cyprus and take part in lots of local activities.

We have two intakes each year (usually April and September) so you would be joining with a group, not on your own, and you will spend your initial time with them getting used to Air Cadets and understanding how the organisation works. Prior to each intake we hold an open evening for those interested in joining and their parents to come along, have a look around, meet current cadets and staff and ask any questions that you may have. You will need to be a minimum of 12 years old and in year 8 or above at school and a maximum of 17 years old.

We meet each Tuesday and Thursday evening at our H.Q. on Sherwood Avenue, Newark, from 19.15 to 21.30. Cadets are expected to attend unless there is a good reason not to, for example school revisions. Cadets are also expected to attend key events, for example Remembrance Sunday and fund raising activities including packing shopping at a local supermarket.

'RAF Blue' uniform is provided free of charge (there is a refundable deposit payable) and we will do our best to help with 'green' uniform and accessories such as boots and shoes but cadets and parents may have to purchase these externally. We also have a range  of equipment such as tents and sleeping bags but, as long as they are suitable, we are happy for cadets to use their own kit.

On joining there will will be some forms to complete, for example any medical information that we need to know about. The pack that is given out whenever Cadets join is available here.

Through an extensive fund raising programme we try to keep the costs of joining and participating to a minimum. On joining, there will be a one-off charge of £8.00 for a squadron t-shirt and and a £15.00 refundable deposit for the uniform and any equipment that the Cadets receive.

During the initial training period there is a weekly subscription of £1.00 which can be paid in advance by cheque/cash or in cash each week. Once the initial training has been completed there is a standard monthly subscription of £10.00 payable via Standing Order.

We are a friendly and welcoming group and prospective Air Cadets and parents are welcome to come and see us any Tuesday or Thursday, however, check with us first in case we are away on a RAF base or playing sport.

Transferring from another Squadron

We welcome enrolled cadets from any Wing who wish to transfer to Newark and District Squadron. You will usually be able to keep your uniform, but we cannot guarantee that you will be able to hold your rank.

Please contact us providing your details and those of your Squadron so that we may discuss the transfer with your CO.
